Was Angeles, Utah
Aloha! Level 1 cheque czech checking in from the Salt Lake Valley, the Wasatch, or the ‘blessed land’ as Wiley would put it. When Brigham Young and his first band of Mormon pioneers descended upon Utah in 1847 they were on to something, for different reasons perhaps, but there is something here that keeps us coming back for more year after year- could be the snow. This season being no exception. And that blessed snow, well it hasn’t seemed to miss a beat. With the Pacific cycle in full effect, filling in every nook, cranny, sidewalk, tree cluster, rock face, spine, and mine tailing, making these mountains the place to be once again.
Wiley Miller- you may have heard of this guy. You know, the non-Mormon part time Utah dwelling Montana ex-pat on a mission from God. His eyes are on several prizes, and he’s not biting off more than he can chew. One particular target, the infamous Rocker’s Gap, was the elephant in the room. You may have seen memorable shots of Mike Wilson, Chris Coulter, and Gigi Rüf hitting this beast some years go. It’s a 90 ft road gap style stepdown, which requires near perfect conditions to hit safely, and this February our stars finally aligned. The shots will do the rest of the talking.
With the mega-mo gap signed in, tallied, accounted for, and off the list, it gave time for further exploration. The mind is never free for too long. Between bouts of sleep, (sometime as much as 8 hours a night) and Café Rio breaks, the restless have been skiing away. In fact the only mongoose to our snake has been the dreaded Presidents (Recreation) Week where everyone and their mother comes out to play. Not that we don’t condone that, but it sure makes it harder to beat the powder farmers to fresh tracks and even harder to avoid the car traffic wadshow. Actually, there was another mongoose: Snowmobiles. The loved and hated tool of filming. On one poorly chosen mission day, when the interior mountains received three feet of blower blower deep, turned an average 20 minute sled excursion into a 4 hour dig out festival. But it all paid off two days later when Wiley added yet another maneuver to his out of bounds freestyle quiver. Mr. Miller and Stefan Thomas have also extended their resume into alpine touring. Long overdue access to some of Wasatch’s finest big mountain areas should prove to be a good warmup for the AK gnarland. And before I forget- Tanner Rainville, Will Wesson, and Josh Bibby have all also been on the loose in Ski Utah, leaving only tracks and taking only footage to prove it. Bagging Trophy Bucks! Skinned and mounted.
