With a low snow year in the lower 48 of the US we decided to mix things up and head to the north island of Japan to one of the deepest cities we’ve ever visited… Sapporo. Our crew was Alex Bellemare, Mike Hornbeck, and Tom Wallisch joined along with photographer Chris O’Connell and Armada TM Josh Bishop. Here’s a few random images from our adventure. LSM wins Superunknown IX

Alright- we know what you’re saying- how the #@%$ did someone who wasn’t even a finalist walk away with the win? Well, first off, Lucas should have been a finalist, but somewhere during the process of selecting a dozen of the top vids from nearly 100 entries some signals got crossed and Lucas got the short end of the stick. Once his vid went live, it was pretty much the unanimous top choice of all the athletes in our crew, and with this year’s contest being such a tough one to judge we offered up our input and handed this one over to our riders to make the final call.

There’s no doubt that this year’s field was the most talented to date and any one of the Finalists could have easily walked away with the win- Dom Laporte arguably has the most impressive urban shots this contest has seen; Mikkel Jøraandstad has the deepest bag of tricks and some of the smoothest jumping style out there; Torvinen, Boville, and Doan crush everything with super unique style, and Emile Bergeron and Alex Beaulieu are well on their way to becoming the next big QC exports; and we could go on…

“You could put together a crew from this year’s entries and probably make a movie that rivals any pro flick out there- the level of talent was insane,” said Level 1′s Josh Berman. “A few years ago we’d be able to narrow the field down to the top 2 or 3 entries, but these days its almost impossible to say that one Finalist is more deserving than the others. Every one of them will undoubtedly be destroying edits and vid segments over the next few years, landing on top of podiums, and otherwise making names for themselves on a global scale.”

Last year’s Superunknown XIII winner Sig Tveit had this to say: “Honestly my pick out of all of them would be Lucas Stål-Madison. In my opinion I think he is the rider who would have the most to give Level 1. He definitely offers some creativity and different flavor that has been unseen for the Level 1 viewers, and viewers of any other production company in that matter.”

Parker White: “Lucas has completely his own style and seems like a hilarious kid, he’s really got something unique going on with his skiing. My Vote is Lucas.”

Phil Casabon: “It’s hard (to pick a winner since the) talent pool is so deep. My favorite is not a finalist but I think has most flavor and uniqueness out of all- Lucas Stål-Madison.”

Ahmet Dadali: “I thought he was ill man- from the moment I saw it I said there’s something different with this guy that keeps my eyes on the computer screen. So many entries were ill, but Lucas brought his own style into the mix.”

Mike Hornbeck: “LSM’s Superunknown entry was a video that I re-watched a couple times and it still left me wanting to see more. His style, edge control, and his tricks are all so dialed, and you can really tell he knows what he is doing because there isn’t any pizza in his video.”

Lucas had the following words and pix to offer:

“When Berman told me I won superunknown , I lol’d. I did’nt even make finals how could I win? But then he said the whole crew where really stoked about the video and I was like, wait he’s serious. HE IS FUCKING SERIOUS GAAAAAAHHHH

I was so damn suprised and so damn happy, that my hand started shaking like crazy. So all the words that I was gonna write back to Berman got all messed up and his first impression of me was probably pretty wierd, haha. At first I wasn’t even sure I was gonna enter the contest or not, since I didn’t have any big tricks in it. But decided that I’d put together an edit of shots that I think is ill and we’ll see what happens. And boy, am I glad I did!

Can’t wait to go out next season and put all my energy to try get something that stands out!

I wanna give a shout out to all enteries this year, especially kids like Austin and Dominic and everyone else killing it this year! Also shout out to all my friends who believed in me and pushed me to keep doing my own thing.

Lets be honest, the winter of 2012 was a disappointment for most of us, at least as far as snowfall and snow quality- resorts have reported near record lows for accumulation and records highs for average temps up and down the East Coast, the Midwest, CO, UT, WY, MT, CA, and the list goes on…

Less-than perfect pow doesn’t necessarily mean less fun, and with warm temps and a sun-filled Colorado sky we didn’t have much to complain about. Thanks to early season snowblowing efforts of epic proportions there was plenty of man-made snow to work with and the Breck Parks staff rallied to push up a few top-notch superpark-style features on our private Summit County glacier.

With no snow at the base of the hill, our daily commute up the mountain tested our rally driving skills.

Tim McChesney and Niklas Eriksson hold it down on the sidelines and tossed out scores to the first crew sessioning the shack jib. Torin Yater-Wallace won with a 92.5. Will Hibbs took a close second place with a 91, and Sig rounded out the podium with a 90.

Superunknown IX winner Lucas Stal-Madison was in attendance, throwing down and proving in no uncertain terms that he’s in every way deserving of the title. He also brought with him a sneak-preview of a season edit that he’s been working on- when this thing drops it will quickly silence all the haters- wait for it!

VT-import Will Hibbs cancelled on his prom date and hopped a flight with less than 12-hours notice after being giving the last minute invite to the shoot. Private park shoots are WAY cooler than Prom- well, depending on how hot your date is… or how hard you charge a 70-ft pipe gap.

Breck local (and team rider) Pat Goodnough joined us for the week and came out swinging, bagging some of the most impressive shots of the session with his creative interpretation(s) of the pipe gap feature.

And with the final session in the bag our crew gears up for a long summer of editing- we’re sitting on hundreds of hours of footage from six months of traveling around the world- just gotta knock it down to 50 minutes of the best action, stories, and anecdotes from one of our most successful seasons yet. 3333 Opening Day Edit

On Saturday, June 23rd Level 1 opened the doors to our new office, studio, and storefront at 3333 Larimer St in downtown Denver, CO.

The storefront is indeed a new thing for us- home to all things Level 1, in addition to all our standard gear, movies, a few in-store only special items, and of course of collabs with all the brands we work with, we’ll also be carrying a very select few athlete signature pieces- Tom Wallisch’s signature Scott skis, goggles, and his Full Tilt boot? Got ‘em. Wiley Miller’s Saga jacket and 4Frnt ski? We’ll be stockin’ em. Mr. Pollard’s Opus and Sir Francis Bacon? We’ll have them too, all in very limited quantities, and many hand-signed by the athletes that designed them!

Located 10 blocks north of Coors Field in Denver’s RINO district (short for River North), our new spot is in a just-renovated warehouse that’s seen many incarnations over the years, most recently a fake X-mas tree assembly plant that was last in action in the mid ’80s (check out the green, red, and gold paint covering the floor in the back of the warehouse, and the heavy-machinery tire tracks that are sealed into the floor of the retail space!).

Tom Wallisch Ad - Behind the Scenes

Three drive by’s, two inspections, killed a few hours, then we finally went in. 10pm-6am. Sometimes the features, the tricks we are shooting that the skiers do are more of something that works better in video and not so much photos. Sometimes it works for both, and almost never do I get to shoot on one that is more for photos than video. Fortunately on this trip the skiers decided to hook me up and we went to this location. Visually, this place was pretty awesome by itself. Great architectural lines, great texture in the materials of the building, good landscape to the building. Now, just add Tom Wallisch. Well actually, just add snow. A lot of it. The landing had to be completely imported, about 6″ deep of snow in a strip about 15×50 feet, also we had to pile snow on the stairs to act as the jump. We were there for a bit building this, well into the morning. For me, this came out exactly as I had designed the shot out in my mind, even the lighting. A good, long day, making the trip worthwhile this this North Face ad coming out of it.

Q: Hey Josh. How are you?

A: I’m good! Just crazy busy. We’re working on editing our new film, and its always a much more long and difficult process then we think its going to be. There’s so much work left to do to finish the movie before our premiere in September – we’re all a bit stressed, but I know we’ll get it done.

Q: A lot of people in the Danish freestyle/freeride environment have seen the movies from Level 1 Productions, but who are Level 1?

A: I started Level 1 thirteen years ago. At the time I was trying to pursue some sort of pro-skiing career in the newschool game, which back then meant getting free skis and partaking in photo shoots within an hour drive from my home base at Stratton Mountain, Vermont. After blowing my knee in January 2000 my friends encouraged me to pick up a video camera and spend the rest of the winter shooting. As it turned out, a lot of our friends happened to be doing some of the freshest stuff, and even though they were under the radar in the overall scheme of things, we ended up with some cool content that made for a watchable (if not way too drawn out) movie.
Since then Level 1 has grown a lot, but very slowly. I’ve added a few very close friends to the filmmaking team over the years, first Freedle Coty who is also from Vermont, and eventually Kyle Decker who grew up in the flatlands of Ohio. We’ve also imported our art director, Schui Baumann, from Germany- he now lives full time in Denver and is responsible for most of our graphics, design, and Level 1 clothing and gear.
Our crew strives to produce the best ski motion imagery we can, and put it together in a way that inspires people around the world to pick up their skis and get out in the mountains, parks, or streets, and expand their horizons.

Q: How has this years winter season been for you and the Level 1 team?

A: This season was really good for us, actually. It was definitely one of the more challenging winters, and we had to work twice as hard and travel twice as far to get to good snow, but we did a lot of traveling and were able to log some great trips, and good shots.

Q: What can we expect from the new Level 1 movie?

A: We’re really going back to Level 1’s roots with this year’s film, focusing on the athletes and trying to focus on style, creativity, and showcasing some of what goes on during the filming process. I think all our fans that like some of our older movies like High Five, REALTIME, and Long Story Short will really be stoked. Lots of urban/street stuff too…

Q: How does a Level 1 movie separate from other ski films?

A: Ultimately all ski films are really the same if you break it all down, but I’d like to think that Level 1 films all have a similar feel, vibe, and style from one year to the next, which maybe sets us apart. We’ve been making movies for 13 years and have kept our crew really small, which I think has allowed us to develop our own particular style and perspective. I think as a crew, both athletes and filmmakers, we’ve got an attention to detail and style that really separates us from most of the others.

Q: Do you think there is a certain spirit in the Level 1 movies?

A: Absolutely. Our films reflect the vision and ideals of a group of friends that has some pretty specific viewpoints. We’re also more then just a “production company” in the traditional sense, we’re a tight-knit family.

Q: In the past 13 years Level 1 Production has released ski films each fall. For the last 1,5 years it seems there is an upcoming trend in making/announcing two-years ski- and snowboard film projects. Can we expect the same from the Level 1 team in the future? What do you think about these two-years projects?

A: In a perfect world I would LOVE to be able to work on a 2-year project. It would give us a chance to really do a few special things that the time constraints of a 1-year project just don’t allow. Right now we rely on the sales of the previous year’s film to pay for a lot of the production on the next film, and our sponsors needs, and our need to keep the Level 1 brand moving in the right direction necessitate a yearly feature film.
I’m jealous of the companies that have the opportunity and sponsor support to make it happen… maybe one of these year’s we can do a 2-year project.

Session 5 at Windells was the much anticipated Level 1 Takeover Session. This was the week when skiers and filmers alike would descend upon Mt. Hood to ski and shoot one final time before the snow melts and premiere season gets into full swing. It just so happened to be the perfect time for Josh Berman and his crew to get a final week of skiing in as the trailer for Level 1′s new film, Sunny, dropped the day before Session 5 started.

Riding the wave of hype for the new movie, Berman and skiers Tom Wallisch, Torin Yater-Wallace, Parker White, Super Unknown Winner Lucas Stal-Madison, Will Wesson and LJ Strenio slayed the lane, stoked out campers and got a few parting shots for the season.

Sunny World Premiere Freeskier Coverage

Level 1′s Sunny premiered to the world for the first time last night before a packed house at City Hall Ampitheater in Denver. The venue, never before used by Level 1 for a premiere, was enormous, featuring three stories for spectators to pack out. And pack it out they did.

At 8 p.m. the doors opened and fans began streaming into the venue. Some made for the merchandise table—grabbing some of the many items that were on sale and also raffle tickets. Some dashed to the bar for drinks. Others headed to the poster signing table, snatching up loads of autographs and snapping photos with some of the many pros on hand; some of the notables who were in the building were Tom Wallisch, Will Wesson, Mike Hornbeck, Wiley Miller, Pat Goodnough, Blake Nyman, Will Berman, Chris Logan, Liam Downey, Tim McChesney, Parker White, Adam Delorme, Bobby Brown, Kolby Ward and Tanner Rainville.

On Saturday, September 8, friends, families, and athletes stood shoulder to shoulder at the City Hall Amphitheatre in Denver, Colorado, to celebrate the release of Level 1’s 13th film, Sunny. Tom Wallisch, Tim McChesney, Parker White, Tanner Rainville, Mike Hornbeck, Pat Goodnough, Will Wesson, Wiley Miller, and Chris Logan signed posters for two hours while the theater filled up. DJ Largechild blasted music on the wheels of steel (read MacBook Pro), drinks flowed from three bars, and raffle tickets were dispensed like candy at a rural New Hampshire street parade.

When the film started, the balconies were so packed you could barely get a glimpse of the opening credits. While sprinting to the bottom floor, I pushed my way to the back of the crowd to see the intro give way to a mix of athlete and travel segments that transitioned perfectly from one scene to the next. Exotic destination trips to Japan and Turkey were standout, while athletes in Alaska explored new urban environments and fully disregarded the pristine peaks. Park shoots at Breckenridge and Sun Valley were immaculate, and every athlete segment documented tricks that were more calculated and unique than a standard ski movie.

Sunny World Premiere Goes Off!

The lights may have been out on Saturday night, but it was definitely Sunny in Denver, CO for the World Premiere of Level 1′s 13th annual feature length film. 1500 friends, family, and fans packed the City Hall Ampitheater coming from far and wide to join the party, and if the crowd reaction and the noise level in the room is the telling sign of a successful event, then this goes down as our biggest and best premiere yet!
“The annual Denver premiere is always the icing on the cake of a year’s worth of hard work and it’s rad to see so many people turn out for it,” said Level 1′s Josh Berman. “I know I speak for the rest of the crew when I say it makes us feel pretty good about what we’re doing.”

Fans lined up around the block and crowded the autograph tables for signed posters from Parker White, Tom Wallisch, Mike Hornbeck, Chris Logan, Tanner Rainville, Wiley Miller, Will Wesson, Tim McChesney, and Pat Goodnough.

Following the pre-show mayhem, the screen was lit up with 53 minutes of the best imagery and action Level 1′s cameras have ever captured, with standout parts and great vibes from nearly everyone in their crew- can’t say too much more without spoiling a few surprises, but rest assured there are plenty. Skullcandy hooked up the beats for the night, setting up DJ Largechild to spin before the show and at the Monster After Party.

Sunny Scores Hat Trick at IF3

Another IF3 has wrapped up and the dust from a long and debauchery-filled weekend in Montreal has begun to settle. One thing is for certain- skiing has never been represented by a better, more diverse, well-produced, and entertaining crop of film as were screened over the past 4 days. Not to mention the skiing itself- more athletes are going bigger, using terrain features more creatively- both urban and natural, getting more tech, and doing their best to define style in their own ways. One thing is for certain- the sport of skiing in 2012 is pretty rad.

Level 1′s sold out show on Friday night went over well- Newschoolers.com’s Jeff Schmuck describes it:

Are you self motivated to the point where you can hold a shoot down solo, running two cameras and making sure you’re covering ALL your bases? Level 1 Pumpkin Carving Contest

The biggest baddest online pumpkin carving contest is back!

Impress us. Inspire us. Scare us. Make us laugh. Make us cry.

Carve the best damn pumpkin you can, take a picture of it, head on over to the Level 1 Facebook Page and post your photo on our wall. All entries must be received by MIDNIGHT on Halloween!

We’ll be doling out some pretty rad prizes, including our grand prize, a BRAND NEW PAIR of 181cm Rossignol Scratch Open skis (retail value $600!), along with outerwear and accessories from Under Armour, bindings from Peak, and movies from Level 1!

The rules? Well, we gotta have some rules in order to make sure you’re not grabbing a photo of some random pumpkin on your neighbor’s front steps, photoshopping something you found in a Google search, or otherwise not playing fairly… All entries should include SOME sort of evidence that the pumpkin actually exists and was done for this contest- whether its the subject of your carving, or just something in the entry that makes it clear to us that its legit, that’s your call- but if there’s any question of the legitimacy of your entry, well, you’re probably gonna get disqualified.

Other rules?

-Entries will be judged on overall impression.
-This contest is open to anyone, anywhere, worldwide (Level 1 reserves the right to sub prizes if shipping to a winner in some farout place isn’t feasible).
-All entries must include at least one pumpkin. Feel free to involve as many pumpkins as you deem appropriate.
-Entries can be photo OR video format (in case yours involves movement or animation- yeah, go nuts!)
-As noted above, something in your entry has to prove that its being done for THIS contest. Take this any way you want…
-Entrants agree to release Level 1 from all claims against injury, bodily harm, and other damages and liabilities related to involvement with this contest.

Sunny Awarded "Best Core Film" at X-Dance

We're pretty excited to be able to add the title of "Best Core Film" to the list of awards and accolades that Sunny is racking up, as awarded by the judges at X-Dance this past weekend. Sincerely flattering considering not only the list of films screened at the event, but the other nominees in this category which included Freeride Entertainment's "Where The Trail Ends," Absinthe's "Resonance," and Burton's "13."

We also brought in a nomination for Best Soundtrack. Not bad!

In his acceptance speech for Best Film at X-Dance 13, Steve Fisher briefly described the process of getting his film "Congo: The Grand Inga Project" produced. The film is about navigating the world's most dangerous rapids on the Congo River in Africa - a feat which had never been done before without loss of life. He related that he had been working for several years on getting the Congo expedition funded but was told that he must first prove himself as a filmmaker by winning a festival award. With the same determination used to organize and complete expeditions, he threw himself into filmmaking and completed "The Halo Effect" which won Best Adventure Film at X-Dance in 2011. The next day he got a call from Red Bull saying the Congo expedition was a go. After accepting the Best film award he thanked both X-Dance and Red Bull for their part in making the film possible.

We had been dreaming this one up for a few year's before our friends at Sun Valley and Snow Park Tech stepped up and got it done for us this past April. Affectionately dubbed "The Treehouse," the 30-ft whale-tail box was dropped onto 14-ft wooden logs, and a 50-ft + rolling gap line into it created the perfect setup for pretty much endless possibilities. Spencer Milbocker's flat 3 japan off the end of the box was captured here by photog Erik Seo.

SAM (Ski Area Management) Magazine nominated it for Terrain Park Feature of the Year along with 19 other setups from around North America.

I had an interesting conversation with LJ Strenio about 10 days ago trying to convince him to join up with Will and Niklas in Sweden for an early season street mission. Was his knee healed enough to send it? Maybe. Was it worth it to travel half way around the world this early in the season to get shots? Perhaps. Did he have the travel budget in place for the not-so-cheap plane ticket? Kinda.

"So I've gotta be at Rails to Riches next Saturday, and if I can win that then I'll definitely get that ticket and head out there," LJ decided. Solid plan. LJ won, for the 5th time, took his prize money and booked a ticket out (not necessarily in that exact order).

Anyway, our crew is on the ground despite LJ dealing with the second series of lost bags over the course of a week, and presumably starting to get after it. These three join (not necessarily in tandem) a second Scanner crew already killing it with Superunknown champs Sig Tveit and Lucas Stal-Madison in and around Stockholm. We'll keep ya updated.

10 years deep- the biggest, best, and most long-standing video talent search in skiing is back and better than ever!

The basic rules for this year’s contest are still the same- entrants are required to put together a 2-and-a-half minute long video showcasing their skills, talent, bag of tricks, style, and personality. No résumés, no still photos, no comp results- just pure unfiltered video action. Entries will be reviewed and judged by the Level 1 staff and our crew of athletes based on the above criteria and overall impression.

In early March we’ll be dropping the honorable mention edits online, followed shortly by 10 finalists.

Here’s the curveball-

We’re partnering up with our friends at Sun Valley Resort, Freeskier Mag, Monster Army, and a few others to REALLY take it to the next level. No pun intended. The top 10 finalists will be invited to a private week-long superpark shoot in April where they’ll be joined by previous Superunknown winners and a film crew from Level 1, on hand to document all the action. Web updates will be released throughout the week, and the best content will be logged for a feature segment in Level 1’s Fall ’13 feature film. At the end of the week finalists, previous Superunknown Winners, and the Level 1 crew will put in their vote for whoever they think killed it the hardest. The skier with the most votes will take home the official title, $5,000 cash, a contract from Monster Army, and an invite to join the Level 1 crew for film shoots throughout the rest of the filming schedule.

Thanks to all our friends and fans for the stoke and support in 2012- it was an amazing year for all of us at Level 1 and we're looking back on 12 months of fond memories and amazing skiing. With that in mind we've been hard at work with crews scattererd across the globe over the past month loggin shots in our efforts to make sure our 2013 release is that much bigger and better!

A quick update- Will Wesson, LJ Strenio, Niklas Eriksson, Lucas Stäl-Madison and Sig Tveit spent the month of December taking advantage of deep snow in streets of Scandinavia. Wiley Miller and Josh Bibby kicked off filming in BC. Tim McChesney logged some shots in UT and Idaho, and Tanner Rainville and Parker White got after it in Cali. Over the past week Logan Imlach got things going the arctic-cold of the AK frontcountry with Chris Logan, and Ahmet Dadali (yup, he's back), and Alex Bellemare have been tearing it up in the midwest. Big things in the works folks... stay runed for details on all the goings on and much, much more.

Lucky #13!?!? Level 1 took home top honors at the 13th annual Powder Video Awards for our 13th feature length film, "Sunny," winning both Best Editing and Movie of the Year. Also taking nominations for Best Natural Air (Parker White), Best JIb (Tom Wallisch), and Best Cinematography, "Sunny" was very well represented.

Josh B in the hot seat, talking about what went into making Level 1's biggest, best, and most successful film yet.

"We've probably been nominated for Movie of the Year a half dozen times," said Level 1's Josh Berman, "but you can never go into something like this having any expectations, especially with so many amazing films in the mix. It was actually a huge surprise to take the win this year, considering this was one of our most jib-heavy movies yet- at least half the movie was filmed off the mountain and in the streets. I give the Powder Mag crew a lot of credit for being so open minded and willing to give top honors to a project thats such a departure from a big-mountain backcountry-centric norm. I know I speak for our entire crew when I say its flattering, humbling, and validating that our vision of skiing is being so appreciated by the industry."

Berman accepts the award for "Best Editing" as Logan Imlach looks on from the big screen.

"It's been a long time coming for Level 1 and it was only a matter of time before they took the top honors at Powder Awards," added Powder Mag Managing Editor, Mike Rogge. "Following a down snow year and at least a few tragic events, a film like "Sunny" reminds us that skiing is supposed to be fun, light-hearted, and enjoyed with friends. In my eyes, it was the obvious choice from the beginning. Simply, watching "Sunny" makes me want to go skiing."

Sun Valley is not your typical resort. Under the guidance of Terrain Park Manager Brian Callahan, this new partnership has hit the ground running, creating some instantly legendary features for springtime film shoots with Burton Snowboards and Level 1, among others. Building on this momentum, Sun Valley brought this same level of success and dedication to their new public park on the historic Dollar Mountain.

While building massive jumps is one thing, especially given SPT’s reputation for innovate jump designs over the last decade, making a feature that truly stands out in the jib department is something entirely different. Ever since handrails were adapted for snow, flat surface boxes and wallrides have been prevalent in parks across the world, with little change or variation, and frequently the only real progression or improvement in non-jump features has been an extra ten feet of Plexiglas or an additional kink in a rail.

Enter Level 1. Preparing for the filming of their latest film, Sunny, Josh Berman- no stranger to documenting the jib evolution- was looking for fresh ideas and found inspiration while shooting a mountain bike slopestyle event. The highlight feature at the event, a dirt berm leading into an elevated curved wooden ramp that sat on logs fifteen feet off of the ground, was not exactly foreign to bikers, but it needed a little tweaking to bring to snow. With this new feature in mind Berman brought the idea to Sun Valley, and Callahan and his crew jumped at the opportunity to create something that had never been done before.

Constructing the Treehouse proved to be no easy task, and, after two weeks of custom welding on the whaleback box, a filming location was chosen at the summit of Mt. Baldy. Installing the six support logs upright, level and plumb was an exercise in itself, and, given the added impact of skiers hitting the 1,500 pound box, Callahan spared no expense in securing the structure. Once the feature was in place, a rhythm section was shaped into the snow as an added element leading up to the wooden beast. With a 360 degree panorama of Idaho’s jagged Sawtooth mountain range as a backdrop and a heavy hitting lineup of Level 1 skiers, the shots practically delivered themselves. Aside from a few minor speed-checking errors, several skiers, notably Spencer Milbocker, Chris Logan, Parker Whiter, and Norwegian Sig Tveit, captured some of the season’s most iconic moments on the Treehouse over the course of two late-April evenings of shooting.

Level 1 and Sun Valley got the reaction they were looking for as comments and movie nominations commending the originality of the feature poured in. As for the future of The Treehouse, Sun Valley has reproduced an exact, albeit more grounded, version on Dollar for park skiers and snowboarders to try their hand at and further share in the fruits of SPT’s partnership.

Kansas Flatlands

With 60-degree temps in Denver on the heels of last weeks storm, Will Wesson and Tim McChesney rolled the dice and headed to Kansas in search of some more hot street action. They found the remnants of major winter storms that had recently rolled through the mid west and left just enough snow for them to get after it… before those 60-degree temps caught up with them once again.

Good times, fresh spots, and shots logged.

Bibby's Back Yard

A few years in the making, conditions, stars, and athlete schedules finally lined up for a trip to the Bibby family cabin in Interior BC to drink a little beer, a lot of whiskey, shoot some guns, rally sleds, and log some shots (of skiing). Josh Bibby put together a crew of Tanner Rainville, Riley Leboe, and Dan Treadway along with Bryn Hughes on the photos and Darren Rayner on the vid.

Lots of snow up high meant lots of rain down low, and a few road closures en route to the trail head.

Say cheese!

Breaking trail wasn't easy while accessing zones that had never seen a sled or ski track, but Treadway didn't have any issues with it.

SUPERUNKOWN X FINALISTS!

10 years deep- the biggest, best, and most long-standing video talent search in skiing is back and better than ever! Superunknown X brought in over 100 entries from around the world, as the hungriest and most talented up-and-comers in the game try to follow in the footsteps of previous winners and make a name for themselves in the ski video scene.

Every year since the inception of the Superunknown contest the talent pool has gotten deeper and the skills, style, and creativity of the entrants has increased exponentially. We claim it every year, but to say that this year's judging process was the most difficult yet would be an understatement. We polled the entire Level 1 staff and our athletes. We watched, re-watched, and watched submissions again and again. We scored entries, re-scored 'em, and then sought some more feedback from our crew. It was not easy, but when all the dust settled we had to choose 10 Finalists for invites to the Superunknown X shoot in Sun Valley, ID. That being said, props and congrats to Superunknown X Finalists selections!

We'll be releasing two per day this week- see below for the entries!

UPDATE: HOW WERE SEMI-FINALISTS AND FINALISTS CHOSEN?!?!

With over 100 entries from around the world, the vast majority of them pretty darn solid, and a good half of them really legit, its a brain-melting task to sift through them all and give each of them a fair shake when we're talking about different skiers with different styles, different parks to film in, different snow conditions, different filmers, and access to different cameras and equipment, etc. A video contest like this is straight up THE singular most subjective contest that we could ever devise- for better or worse it has always been that way and it always will- there's no changing it. But we still want to make the playing field as even as possible AND give each and every entry a fair shot at making fhe Finals which is why we took so much time this year to do it as best we could.

We kicked things off by having everyone in the office watch every single entry and give them a raw score based on the "judging criteria" listed in the official rules: 10% Personality, 20% Technical Ability, 30% Style, and 40% Overal Impression for a total score of between 1 and 100. We then divided these scores by the number of people reviewing the videos and came up with an average score for each entry. We then took the top 45 scoring entries and put them online for our entire crew of athletes to review and had them get back to us with their top 10 lists. We then tallied up ALL the votes from our staff and crew and ranked those top 45 in order, awarding Finalist spots to the top 10 scoring entries and Semi-Finalists spots to the 11th through 30th placing entries. There you have it.

There's certainly no magic formula and there's no way to make everyone happy but this is the best system that we could come up with. The differences in scores were minimal and there's really no claiming that one edit is necessarily better than another- just different.

The toughest decision of all will be left up to everyone on-site at the Finals in Sun Valley, where its going to surely be a next-to-impossible task to chose a single winner. We'll all be looking forward to seeing how that goes down! Until then...

Why the Wildcard spot?!?! Sandy put together an edit that was very deserving of a spot in this year's Finals, receiving a thumbs up from pretty much the entire Level 1 staff and crew. But with all of his accomplishments and accolades over the past year, does he still fit with the MO of the Superunknown contest? Tough call... we think so, and he still qualifies according to our definition of who is eligible for the contest, but we didn't want to ruffle any feathers of those who may not agree, so we made our call on the top 10 and decided to award an 11th "Wildcard" spot to Sandy. Action Cam by Sony Best Shot Contest

Yet another addition to this year's Superunknown contest in our efforts to make it the best event of the Spring...

We're partnering up with our friends at Sony and hooking up each of the 10 Superunknown X finalists with an Action Cam with Wi-Fi and mounts when they arrive in Sun Valley. They'll be able to use their fresh new POV cameras to shoot anything and everything throughout the week, on and off the hill, and share it online throughout the event. At the end of the week we'll be compiling the best of the best shots and releasing them in an edit for public voting. The shot with the most votes takes the title and the winner walks away with $1000 of Sony product!

Level 1 Constructions Wins Orage Masters!

The Level 1 Construction's crew of Chris Logan, Mike Hornbeck, LJ Strenio, Banks Gilberti and their Union Rep Josh Berman put in work this past weekend in Sun Valley and took the title at the 8th Orage Masters!

"It was a LONG day for our crew" said Berman. "These guys were up before sunrise filling potholes and directing traffic on the access road to Dollar. I'd say they put in almost a full 8 hours before the skiing even started." It was indeed an early morning for the crew- they kicked things off flagging traffic on the access road and handing out beers to all cars driving into the Dollar parking lot. After making sure the roads were sufficiently safe and the last beer had been passed out, they strapped on their boots and joined the party already in progress.

Equal parts skiing, costume contest, and debauchery-fest of epic proportions our team skied as hard as their levels of inebriation would allow, stomped more often than not, and kept the crowd going with entertaining antics from start to finish.

At the end of an amazing week of action in Sun Valley, the 11 Superunknown X Finalists and the Level 1 crew cast their votes- based not just on what went down this week but their video entries as well- and when all the dust settled Magnus Graner came out on top- walking away $5k in cash, an invite to hang and shoot with Level 1, and a Monster Army contract. "This is pretty much the best contest out and I was so excited to make Finals with so many amazing entries," Magnus had to say. "I can't really believe that I won- now lets party!"

End of the Road

“The end of the Road” It always has an intriguing and adventurous sound to it. Bralorne truly is the end of the road in so many ways. Having a house there for the last ten years that looks like the beer commercial from hell has brought so many great adventures and friendships starting from the end of the road. I now believe it is not the end, but a beginning point of “who knows what will happen?” This time around I was able to bring the crew from Level One up to the magical land of Bralorne to enjoy some late spring powder and colourful local vibe. Wiley Miller, Parker White, Josh Bibby, and Freedle Coty made the trek and scored some epic shots (photos as well as whiskey), met some locals, and got to enjoy some of the epic terrain right out of town. Guns, gas, beer, heli, sleds, and your own private cabin in the middle of nowhere is just about as good as it gets. Or is it the middle of nowhere?
